The Owner's Insights on the Gentech ED160WELDYSRE 6.8kVA Yanmar Diesel Welder Generator
One engine doing two jobs is the whole argument. 6.8kVA of power for your tools and lights, plus 160 amps of welding output at a 60% duty cycle. That's a generator and a welder you're not carrying separately or setting up twice.
The Yanmar L100N5 is what makes it worth the money. It's a proper commercial diesel with parts available anywhere and a service life measured in working years rather than seasons.
Two things to plan for. The tank is 5.4 litres, which is 3.3 hours at 80% load, so a jerry can travels with it. And it's 100.5kg, which is a two-person lift or a ramp onto the ute.
Why You'll Love the Gentech ED160WELDYSRE 6.8kVA Yanmar Diesel Welder Generator
- 160 amps of welding. Fabrication, repairs and fencing without a second machine.
- 60% duty cycle. Six minutes welding in every ten, not a hobby rating.
- 6.8kVA of power output. Your tools, lights and chargers off the same engine.
- Yanmar L100N5 diesel. The engine your mechanic knows and can get parts for.
- Electric start. Turn the key on a cold morning instead of pulling.
- 7kVA alternator. Headroom when your loads jump around.
- 100.5kg, 810 x 550 x 560mm. Compact enough for the ute or the service trailer.
- Double 15A GPO. Standard outlets for your normal 240V gear.

Why You Should Consider a Gentech Welder Generator
Gentech build diesel and petrol generators for the Australian trade and rural market, and the ED160WELDYSRE combines their Yanmar diesel with a 160 amp welder. See the rest of the Gentech range.

What 160 amps at 60% duty cycle actually means
Duty cycle is the honest number on any welder. Sixty percent means you can weld for six minutes out of every ten at full output before it needs to cool. That's a working rating, not a hobby one: enough for general fabrication, repairs, fencing and maintenance without stopping every couple of rods. At 160 amps you're covering most general-purpose stick work on farm and site steel.
Why a combined unit beats two machines
On a mobile job, carrying a generator and a welder means two engines to fuel, two things to load, and two things to maintain. This does both off one Yanmar. If your work is repairs and fabrication out where there's no power, that halves what goes on the trailer and what you're servicing. If you only ever need one of the two functions, a dedicated machine will do that job better for the money.
Be realistic about the 5.4 litre tank
At 80% load it burns 1.65 litres an hour, which is 3.3 hours on a tank. That's the trade for keeping it at 100.5kg and compact. For a repair job, a morning's fencing or a service call it's plenty. For a full day of continuous welding you'll be refuelling, so carry a jerry can and treat it as part of the kit rather than a surprise.
Why the engine brand is the decision
The L100N5 is a known commercial Yanmar diesel. Parts are available across the country, any diesel mechanic recognises it, and it's built for working hours. On a machine at this price that's what you're actually buying: the welder and the alternator are serviceable parts, but the engine is what decides whether it's still earning its keep in five years.
Where you can and can't run it
It's an open frame diesel at 80 dBA from seven metres, which is normal for the class. On a farm, a site or an industrial yard nobody minds. Near houses it will be heard, and a welder generator is not something you run in a residential street quietly. Not sure whether this is the right size for your welding and your power loads? Call the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll go through it, or try the Generator Finder.
What's Included
- Gentech ED160WELDYSRE 6.8kVA Yanmar diesel welder generator
- Electric start
- Double 15A GPO outlets
What's Not Included
- Diesel fuel
- Welding leads, electrode holder and earth clamp
- Welding rods and safety gear
- A jerry can, which you'll want with a 5.4 litre tank
Check what welding leads come with your unit when you order, because that varies. The 5.4 litre tank gives about 3.3 hours at load, so plan on carrying fuel with it.
Not Sure Which Welder Generator Suits You?
The ED160WELDYSRE suits you if you need power and welding on the same job, out where there's no mains, and you'd rather run one machine than two. It's the wrong pick if you only need one of the two functions, where a dedicated generator or welder gives you more for the money. Not sure it covers your welding and your power loads? Call the store on 03 7056 6732 and we'll work it out with you before you buy.
