Inverter Generator vs Regular Generator: Price, Noise and Power Quality

In the inverter generator vs regular generator call, the inverter wins for camping, caravans and quiet nights. A regular open frame usually gives more watts per dollar for tools and heavy loads. Four pairs from our generators show the gap.

That's the quick version. If you only need a camp fridge and some lights, buy the inverter and get on with your weekend. If your list includes a compressor or half the house, keep reading.

How Inverter and Regular Generators Make Power

Both types burn fuel to spin an alternator. The difference is what happens to that power before it reaches your socket.

Most inverter generators run on petrol too, so you're not choosing between an inverter and a petrol unit. For the longer explanation, see what an inverter generator is used for.

Regular Generators, Fixed 3,000 rpm and AVR

A regular generator, also sold as a conventional or standard generator, sends the alternator's power straight to your outlets. To hold 50Hz, its engine spins at one fixed speed, whether you're charging a phone or running a saw.

Plenty of overseas guides quote 3,600 rpm. The open frames sold here list 3,000 rpm on their spec sheets, including the Westinghouse WHXC3750 Pro and the Welling & Crossley WC-P8750.

They also use AVR, automatic voltage regulation, to hold your voltage steady as your loads switch on and off. That's enough to keep your tools and fridge happy.

Inverter Generators, Eco Throttle and Pure Sine Wave

An inverter generator turns the alternator's output into DC, then electronics rebuild it as a clean 240V sine wave. Because the electronics set the frequency, your engine is free to speed up and slow down with the load.

The Westinghouse iGen2250 lists a maximum engine speed of 5,000 rpm, with an eco throttle that winds it back when you're only running lights. Its page puts harmonic distortion under 2.5%.

At camp, that means your engine idles along at a murmur while your fridge keeps the beer cold.

Open Frame Inverter Generators

"Open frame" only describes the build. Champion's help centre lists open frame inverters from 4,250W to 9,000W, and we stock one.

The Welling & Crossley WC-P11250I gives you inverter output at 8,500W rated, in a 73kg frame. If you want big inverter power without an enclosed unit's bulk, that's the shape to look for.

Differences Between Inverter and Regular Generators

The fairest test for you is the same brand at a similar size, both on our shelves. Here are four pairs, with every figure taken from the product pages on 12 September 2026.

Price per Running Watt

Put two generators side by side at the same money and the regular one usually gives you more watts.

For $100 more, the Westinghouse iGen2250 gives you 1,200 fewer running watts than the WHXC3750. That's $716 against $396 for every 1,000 running watts.

The Hyundai 3kW pair is the exception. The HY3500i costs you $166.10 more than the HY4100L but gives you 450 more running watts, so per watt it's slightly cheaper.

Go bigger and the gap blows out. At 7-8kW, an inverter costs you about twice as much per running watt on the Welling & Crossley pair, and 2.6 times as much on the Hyundai pair.

Owners feel it. One Whirlpool member summed up inverter generators as quiet, but not cheap. Hyundai's warranty softens it a little for you: 2 years on the HY3500i and HY8000i, against 12 months or 100 hours on the HY4100L and HY7000LEK.

Whichever type you pick, build quality matters. A member on another thread said to judge the quality of the engine and the quality of the circuitry, so buy a brand with Australian backing and your money goes further.

Maximum Output and Parallel Kits

You'll still read that inverters top out around 3.5-4kVA. That's out of date. The WC-P11250I gives you 8,500W rated and the WC-P9000Si 8,200W, though regular open frames still go further, with the Welling & Crossley WC-P13750 rated at 10,000W.

Small inverters have another trick for you. The Briggs & Stratton P2500 and P3500 both link to a second unit with the QPT parallel kit, so you can add capacity later instead of replacing yours.

Noise Levels at Light and Full Load

Inverters are quieter, by 6 to 12dB on these pairs at 7 metres:

• Hyundai HY3500i 60 dB(A), HY4100L 72 dB(A)
• Welling & Crossley WC-P9000Si 64 dBA, WC-P8750 72 dBA
• Hyundai HY8000i 67 dB, HY7000LEK 73 dB(A)

Load changes what you hear, though. Westinghouse rates the iGen2250 at 53 dB(A) on a quarter load and 62 dB(A) flat out.

Owners hear the same. A Whirlpool member with a Honda 2kVA inverter says it's very quiet on a few hundred watts, but past about 1kW it sounds like an older non-inverter generator. A member on another thread put much of the difference down to the enclosure and exhaust.

Weight by Generator Size

Small inverters are much lighter. The HY3500i weighs 23kg against 46kg for the HY4100L, which is the difference between you lifting it into the ute alone and calling a mate.

At 7-8kW, that flips. The WC-P9000Si inverter weighs 9kg more than the WC-P8750 open frame, and the HY8000i is 27.1kg heavier than the HY7000LEK. The open frame WC-P11250I inverter is the lightest of those big units at 73kg.

At that size yours will live on wheels anyway, so the price gap matters more to you than the kilos.

Fuel Use and Runtime per Tank

Picture a two-day blackout with the servo shut. The generator that stretches your fuel is the one you'll thank.

Inverters do use less, and your fairest numbers come from the Welling & Crossley pair. Each maker's spec table gives one test point at quarter load. The WC-P9000Si inverter uses 0.73 litres per kWh and the WC-P8750 open frame 0.91, so the inverter burns about 20% less fuel for every kWh you draw.

At the ACCC's 2 September 2026 petrol average of $2.05 a litre, that's about $1.50 against $1.87 for each kWh. The WC-P11250I does slightly better again, at 0.69 litres per kWh. For figures across the range, see generator fuel consumption.

An inverter's thirst also follows your load. Westinghouse's figures for the iGen2600 show 0.45 litres an hour at 450W, rising to 0.91 at 1,800W.

Owners in long outages back that up. A commenter from Puerto Rico, four months without power after Hurricane Maria, said they spent $300 to $400 a month on fuel and would choose the inverter to use less. One Whirlpool member calls non-inverter generators thirsty and noisy at a constant rpm.

Regular open frames often carry a bigger tank at small sizes. The HY4100L holds 15 litres against 6 in the HY3500i, so you'll top yours up less often on a long day.

Power Quality, THD and Sensitive Electronics

This is the part most guides overstate. You'll read that a regular generator will cook your laptop, and a maker of both types says otherwise.

Champion's help centre puts its conventional portables at about 12% to 20% harmonic distortion, depending on load. It calls that perfectly acceptable for your TV and computer, and recommends under 3%, which its inverters deliver, for gear like a UPS battery backup.

Whirlpool members explain why. Most modern electronics use switch-mode power supplies that cope with rough power, so a slightly ragged waveform barely registers. On that thread, the bigger worry on small cheap generators is the voltage swing when a heavy load like your kettle switches off.

There are exceptions. One owner went pure sine inverter because their water pump controllers were sensitive to mains noise. Our article on whether generators damage electronics goes deeper.

So a decent AVR open frame will run your fridge and TV. If the maker of your gear says it needs clean power, buy an inverter and sleep easy.

For a fridge and lights over a weekend, you might not need a generator at all. One Whirlpool owner reckoned that once you're spending more than about $1,000 on a small generator, a battery and inverter setup may suit you better, if it does everything you need.

A portable power station is that setup in one box, with no fuel for you to carry and nothing to hear.

Home Backup During Blackouts

How much of your house do you want running?

For the fridge and a few lights overnight, a 2-4kW inverter is your easy pick. It's quiet for the neighbours and sips fuel on a light load.

If you want bigger loads going too, like a pump or the washing machine, a regular open frame gives you more watts per dollar. The HY7000LEK gives you 5,000 running watts for $1,349.70.

Whichever you buy, never plug it into a wall socket or your switchboard. Energy Safe Victoria warns this can back-feed the network, and says any wiring change needs a licensed electrician.

Keep it outside, too. The same page warns that generators give off carbon monoxide you can't see or smell, and it can kill quickly, so never run one indoors or in an enclosed area. A well-ventilated carport or veranda works, with the exhaust pointed away from the house.

Yes for the essentials, rarely for everything at once. Big inverters make it possible, with 7,000 running watts from the HY8000i and 8,500W from the WC-P11250I.

Regular open frame. On a site you want watts per dollar and a tank that lasts your day, and nobody minds 72 dB(A) over a saw.

So which suits you? Buy an inverter if it rides to camp or runs light loads beside your house overnight.
